The name of the city of Agadir comes from the Tamazight language which means "fortified granary collective." Agadir is a city in central-western Morocco, located on the Atlantic coast, in the Souss region, 520 km south of Casablanca and 245 km west of Marrakech. It is the capital of the administrative region Souss-Massa-Draa and the Prefecture of Agadir-Ida Outanane.

The present city was rebuilt 2 km south of the affected area.
