AGADIR CITY

The name of the city of Agadir comes from the Tamazight language which means "fortified granary collective." Agadir is a city in central-western Morocco, located on the Atlantic coast, in the Souss region, 520 km south of Casablanca and 245 km west of Marrakech. It is the capital of the administrative region Souss-Massa-Draa and the Prefecture of Agadir-Ida Outanane.

Agadir and the Souss-Massa-Draa (SMD) with 10% of Morocco's population and 10% of the area of ??the country, serve important economic center multidisciplinary in agriculture, fishing, tourism, but also in services and trade.

February 29, 1960 at 23h 40' earthquake lasting 15 seconds, with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Agadir. Neighborhoods Founti, Talbordj, Yachech and Kasbah are destroyed 90-95%, the new city at 50%. It is estimated that 12,000 to 15,000 people died in the earthquake.

The present city was rebuilt 2 km south of the affected area.
